Why I Give
Encouraging Life Long Leadership

In the early 1980s, Steve Goldman was part of a cadre of young people who participated in a JCFGEB leadership training program in order to enhance their contributions to the Jewish community. In 1983, he received the Moses and Celia Lesser Award, which acknowledged his contributions to the Jewish community and signified more to come. As part of the honor, he received a stipend that helped fund his first mission to Israel. “I went, with my wife, as part of the UJC Young Leadership Cabinet. It was an eye-opening experience,” says Steve. And, it furthered a lifelong commitment to the community. Four years ago, he helped found the present Young Leadership Division (YLD).

As a former member of the Federation’s Leadership Development Committee and as a current Federation Board member, Steve sees the unique opportunities the East Bay Jewish community offers to young people. “The East Bay is looking for new leaders and new ideas,” he says. “It does not take long to step up in the ranks and have a decided impact.” He understands what this kind of involvement can mean both for the community and for the individual.

“I can clearly trace my commitment back to my participation in YLD,” says Steve. “It has given me the opportunity to give back to the community and fulfills an important piece of my life – my family, my career, my personal life and my communal life. Without it, I would not feel completely whole.”
